Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
Most AFM106 failures fall into three patterns. Identify yours before pulling the module.
Fault Pattern 1 — No DC Output, All LEDs Dark
Hard internal failure: blown input fuse, failed inrush limiter, or dead switching transistor. Confirm with a clamp meter on the DC bus — zero volts. The module is dead. Order the N.P.0285A8148 and proceed to swap.
Fault Pattern 2 — Intermittent Output / Voltage Sag Under Load
Aging electrolytic capacitors or a marginal output filter. You’ll see sporadic I/O communication errors or module resets in the DCS event log. Check DC bus voltage under full rack load — if it drops more than 3% below nominal, the AFM106 is failing. Swap it at the next maintenance window before it takes the rack down hard.
Fault Pattern 3 — Fault LED Lit, System 800xA Alarm Active
The AFM106 reports power status via the backplane diagnostic bus. A persistent fault LED with an 800xA alarm on the PSU slot can indicate thermal shutdown from blocked ventilation. Check airflow first. If the module doesn’t recover after a 10-minute cool-down and power cycle, replace it.
Replacement Procedure (Field-Verified):
- Confirm the redundant PSU is active and carrying full rack load. If no redundancy exists, schedule a controlled shutdown.
- Inhibit the rack in System 800xA to suppress alarms during the swap.
- Loosen the two captive screws on the AFM106 front panel. Pull straight out — do not rock laterally; the backplane connector is keyed but fragile under side-load.
- Inspect backplane connector pins for bent contacts or carbon scoring before inserting the replacement.
- Seat the new N.P.0285A8148 fully until both captive screws engage. Tighten finger-tight, then a quarter-turn with a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Observe LED sequence: green POWER LED should illuminate within 3 seconds. Fault LED on immediately = check input voltage upstream of the module.
- Re-enable the rack in 800xA. Verify all I/O modules report healthy. Measure DC bus voltage — should be within ±1% of nominal.
- No firmware download, no addressing, no DIP switches. The AFM106 is a pure power supply. Zero configuration required.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
The AFM106 was built for plant floors, not server rooms. ABB’s design brief covered the full spectrum of industrial abuse: ambient temperature swings of 40°C between day and night shifts, continuous vibration from compressors and pumps running at 10–150 Hz, and humidity that condenses on cold mornings before the plant heats up.
The switching topology handles the voltage fluctuations common in facilities running heavy motor loads. Conformal coating on the PCB blocks moisture ingress and corrosive airborne contaminants — mandatory in chemical and petrochemical environments. The backplane connector uses a high-retention-force contact system that resists the micro-vibration loosening that kills lesser modules over time.
Field data from oil & gas and power generation installations puts MTBF well above 100,000 hours under normal operating conditions. Every unit we ship from Xiamen passes incoming inspection: visual check, part number verification against ABB manufacturing records, and a functional power-on test confirming DC output within specification. Modules that fail inspection are not listed. Simple policy.
