Product Overview

990-16-XX-01-CN MOD:106M1675-01 — Stop the Clock on Your Downtime

Every minute a compressor train or turbine auxiliary sits idle, you’re bleeding money. A failed vibration transmitter shouldn’t be the bottleneck. The Bently Nevada 990-16-XX-01-CN MOD:106M1675-01 is a 2-wire, loop-powered 4–20 mA vibration transmitter built for continuous machinery protection — and we have it on the shelf in Xiamen, ready to move today. No 8-week factory lead time. No waiting on a distributor’s backorder queue. You call, we ship.

This unit slots directly into your existing Proximitor® signal chain and delivers a clean analog output to your DCS or PLC AI card. No rack upgrade. No firmware negotiation. Swap it in, verify your loop, and get your machine back online.

Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Ten years of field work teaches you that most 990-series failures fall into three buckets. Here’s what to check before you condemn the transmitter — and what to watch when you install the replacement.

Common Failure Modes:

  • Output frozen at 4 mA or 20 mA: Almost always a wiring fault or a dead Proximitor upstream. Before swapping the transmitter, verify the Proximitor gap voltage is within the -10 to -18 VDC window. A gap outside this range will drive the 990 output to rail.
  • Noisy / erratic 4–20 mA signal: Check shield continuity on the signal cable. A broken drain wire or a ground loop between the Proximitor enclosure and the DCS cabinet will inject noise that looks like real vibration. Isolate the shield at one end only.
  • Output reads correctly at bench but drifts in the field: Thermal cycling is the usual culprit. Inspect the terminal block connections — oxidized or under-torqued terminals on the loop wiring cause intermittent resistance that shifts the mA output. Re-terminate with fresh ferrules.
  • DCS AI card shows 0 mA (open loop): Confirm loop supply voltage at the transmitter terminals under load. If the DCS card sources less than 12 VDC at the field terminal, the 990 will not power up. Add a loop isolator/conditioner if the cable run is long.

Replacement Checklist:

  • Record the existing Proximitor gap voltage and vibration reading before de-energizing — this is your baseline for post-installation verification.
  • Confirm the “XX” range code on the outgoing unit matches the replacement. A mismatched range will give you a valid 4–20 mA signal that maps to the wrong engineering unit span in the DCS.
  • After installation, apply loop power and verify 4 mA output at zero vibration (machine stopped). Then bump the shaft or use a calibrator to confirm the span end.
  • Update the DCS tag descriptor and range if you changed the XX configuration — a mislabeled AI point is a future troubleshooting trap.
  • No dip switches or firmware to configure on this model. It is a passive analog device. What you see on the label is what you get.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The 990-series transmitter was not designed for a climate-controlled instrument room. It was designed for the field — and the field is brutal.

Offshore platforms subject instrumentation to salt-laden air, constant vibration from the deck structure, and temperature swings that cycle from tropical heat to cold-start mornings. Petrochemical plants run steam-traced instrument lines through areas where ambient temperatures exceed 60°C. Cement and mining operations generate dust and vibration levels that destroy consumer-grade electronics in weeks.

The 990-16-XX-01-CN is rated to operate from -40°C to +85°C without derating. Its solid-state design eliminates the mechanical failure modes — no relays, no moving contacts, no electrolytic capacitors in the signal path that degrade with thermal cycling. The industrial-grade housing resists ingress from dust and moisture, and the loop-powered architecture means there is no internal power supply to fail.

Baker Hughes / Bently Nevada subjects the 990 series to vibration and shock testing per IEC 60068 standards — the same standards used to qualify equipment for offshore and heavy industrial service. When you install this transmitter on a compressor bearing housing that itself vibrates at 1× running speed, the transmitter is measuring vibration while simultaneously surviving it.

Units sourced through siemensplc.com are inspected for physical integrity, label authenticity, and connector condition before dispatch. ESD-safe, moisture-barrier packaging is used for all international shipments to ensure the unit arrives in the same condition it left our warehouse.
