Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Step 1 — Confirm the fault before you pull the module. On the FX2N base unit, check the LED indicators on the FX2N-16EYT itself. If the output LEDs are lit but the field device is not responding, the fault is likely downstream (wiring, load, or field PSU). If the module LEDs are dark with the CPU in RUN and outputs commanded ON, the transistor stage has failed — replace the module.

Step 2 — Power down correctly. Cut field power (24 VDC load supply) first, then cut the PLC main power. Never hot-swap an FX2N extension module. The FX bus connector carries live 5 VDC logic power and hot-insertion can corrupt the CPU’s I/O map or damage the bus interface IC on both the module and the base unit.

Step 3 — No DIP switches, no addressing. The FX2N-16EYT uses automatic I/O address assignment. The base unit scans the extension bus at power-up and assigns Y addresses sequentially from left to right. If you are replacing a failed unit in a multi-module chain, the replacement will inherit the same Y address block automatically — no configuration required. Verify the address map in GX Developer or GX Works2 under PLC Diagnostics → I/O System Setting after power-up.

Step 4 — Check the extension cable if using FX2NC. If your base unit is an FX2NC, the FX2N-16EYT requires the FX2NC-CNV-IF conversion adapter. Skipping this adapter is the most common installation error on FX2NC systems — the module will appear to seat correctly but the bus will not communicate.

Step 5 — Verify total I/O count and extension power budget. The FX2N base unit supports a maximum of 256 I/O points across all extension modules. Adding the FX2N-16EYT increases the bus current draw by 30 mA. If your base unit is already near its extension power limit (check the base unit manual for the specific model’s budget), adding another module may cause intermittent resets or ERR LED faults on the CPU.

Common fault codes associated with FX2N-16EYT failure:

  • ERR LED flashing on CPU — Often indicates I/O bus communication error. Reseat the extension connector and check for bent pins before condemning the module.
  • Output point stuck ON — Transistor latch-up from inductive load spike without flyback diode. Check all inductive loads (solenoids, relays) for suppression diodes across the coil.
  • Output point stuck OFF — Open-circuit transistor. Confirm with a multimeter: with output commanded ON, measure collector-to-emitter voltage. >1 VDC drop indicates a failed transistor stage.
  • Intermittent output dropout at high cycle rates — Thermal derating. At ambient >45 °C with all 16 points switching at high frequency, reduce simultaneous ON points or improve panel ventilation.

Firmware note: The FX2N-16EYT has no onboard firmware — it is a passive I/O module. No firmware update is required or possible. Compatibility is determined solely by the base unit’s CPU version. All FX2N CPU versions from V1.00 onward support this module without restriction.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The FX2N-16EYT was engineered for the factory floor, not the lab. Mitsubishi Electric designed this module to operate continuously in environments that would kill consumer-grade electronics within weeks.

Vibration: Rated to withstand 9.8 m/s² (1G) continuous vibration from 57–150 Hz — the frequency range generated by industrial compressors, presses, and conveyor drives. The PCB is conformally coated and all connectors are mechanically secured to prevent micro-fretting under sustained vibration cycles.

Thermal cycling: Operating range of 0 °C to +55 °C with storage down to -25 °C. The transistor output stage is derated conservatively — at full 55 °C ambient with all 16 outputs active, the module remains within thermal limits without forced cooling. In practice, most panel installations run 10–20 °C cooler than the rated maximum, giving substantial thermal headroom.

Humidity and contamination: Rated to 95% RH non-condensing. The photocoupler isolation barrier prevents moisture-induced leakage currents from bridging the logic and field circuits. In high-humidity environments (coastal plants, food processing with washdown proximity), ensure the control panel maintains positive pressure with filtered air to prevent condensation on the PCB surface.

EMI immunity: The photocoupler isolation stage provides >500 V galvanic isolation between the PLC logic bus and the field output circuit. This blocks common-mode noise from inductive loads, VFDs, and welding equipment from propagating back into the CPU — a critical protection feature in heavy industrial environments where ground loops are endemic.

Shock resistance: 147 m/s² (15G) rated for transportation and installation shock. Units shipped from our Xiamen warehouse are packed in ESD-safe anti-static bags with foam-lined boxes specifically to maintain this rating through international air freight handling.

Global Express Logistics

When your line is down, lead time is everything. Here is exactly how fulfillment works from our Xiamen warehouse to your facility:
