Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Swapping a 1788-ENBT under pressure is not the time to learn on the job. Here is what experienced FAEs know that the manual does not tell you clearly enough.

Step 1 — Confirm the fault is the daughterboard, not the host module. The 1788-ENBT sits on the 1788-CN2xx bridge. If your bridge module MS LED is solid red and the NS LED is off or flashing red, the daughterboard is the likely culprit. If both LEDs are dark, suspect the host module or backplane power first.

Step 2 — Power down before removal. The 1788-ENBT is NOT hot-swappable. Attempting to remove it under power risks corrupting the host module firmware and damaging the edge connector. Kill the rack power, wait 10 seconds for capacitors to discharge, then proceed.

Step 3 — Check the series revision before installing. A /A revision daughterboard on a /B host module can cause firmware handshake failures. Match the series suffix. Check the label on the host module side panel — it shows the compatible daughterboard revision range.

Step 4 — IP address reassignment. The replacement 1788-ENBT ships with no IP address configured. Your network will not see it until you assign one. Use RSLinx Classic or Studio 5000 EtherNet/IP configuration tool with BOOTP/DHCP server enabled. If your plant uses static addressing, have the original IP, subnet mask, and gateway ready before you power up. Failure to pre-configure this is the number one cause of replacement-did-not-fix-it calls.

Step 5 — Firmware version check. After installation, go online with Studio 5000 and verify the module firmware matches what your project file expects. A mismatch generates a Module Mismatch fault (fault code 16#0107). Download the correct firmware from Rockwell PCDC before the swap if you have internet access on-site.

Common fault codes associated with 1788-ENBT failure:

• 16#0001 — Connection Request Error: Daughterboard not responding to EtherNet/IP connection requests. Replace the 1788-ENBT.
• 16#0203 — Connection Timeout: Network cable or daughterboard RJ-45 port failure. Swap cable first, then module.
• 16#0107 — Module Mismatch: Firmware or series revision incompatibility. Verify revision and update firmware.
• 16#0204 — Port Not Available: Daughterboard not seated correctly or edge connector damaged. Reseat or replace.

Step 6 — Verify EDS file registration. After the module comes online, RSNetWorx for EtherNet/IP should auto-detect it. If it shows as an unknown device, manually register the EDS file from Rockwell website. This is common when replacing with a newer series revision.
