Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Before you pull the module, confirm the fault is actually the GBC and not a bus wiring issue. Here’s the field sequence that saves you from swapping a good module:

Step 1 — Isolate the fault. In Proficy Machine Edition, open the hardware configuration and check the GBC status block. A solid red LED on the module with a bus fault code (typically Fault Code 0x0041 or 0x0042) points to the controller itself, not the field devices. If you’re seeing intermittent bus timeouts (Fault Code 0x0044), check your Belden 9182 termination resistors at both ends of the segment before condemning the module.

Step 2 — Document the device table. The IC693BEM331 stores a Genius device table in non-volatile memory. Before removal, use PME or the Hand-Held Monitor (IC690ACC901) to export or photograph the device address assignments (SBA — Serial Bus Address, 0–31). You’ll need to re-enter these during commissioning of the replacement unit.

Step 3 — Power down the rack. The Series 90-30 backplane does not support hot-swap on communication modules. De-energize the rack power supply (IC693PWR321 or IC693PWR330) before extracting the module. Failure to do so risks backplane damage and potential CPU fault.
